History

Droids are mechanical beings, often possessing artificial intelligence. They are used in a variety of roles and environments. Initially they were produced to carry out tasks too menial or too dangerous for humans and other species. However, thanks to the development of more and more specialised software, droids are also used in complex tasks. Their production names are usually an arrangement of numbers and letters.

The level of their artificial intelligence programming has always been an issue: either the droids were overly intelligent or overly stupid. In the first case, they might rebel, in the second case, they were almost useless.
Their creativity, intelligence, and capacity for independent thought are the current parameter to divide them into five classes.

  • Class one: they are programmed to work in the fields of mathematics, physics, physical sciences, and medicine. Although they studied these fields they were hardly ever programmed to apply their knowledge to every-day situations. class one droids were considered to be little more than computers since all they usually did was make calculations. Class one includes medical droids, biological science droids, physical science droids, mathematics droids.
  • Class two: they are programmed in engineering and other technical sciences. However they differ from class one droids because they applied the science to real-life situations. They are rarely equipped with basic vocabulators since they use to communicate through binary. The class two droids include astromech droids, exploration droids, environmental droids, engineering droids, repair droids.
  • Class three: they are programmed to interact with humans. They were said to be the most advanced droids ever invented. They include: protocol droid, servant droids, tutor droids, child care droids.
  • Class four: they are programmed to fight. Almost all class four droids carried weapons. They include: security droids, gladiator droids, battle droids, assassin droids.
  • Class five: they are simple labor droids that did menial labor that no one wanted to do. Class five droids were the most often encountered droids: general labor droids, labor specialist droids, hazardous-service droids.

The Museum has subdivided droids into seven collections:

  • Astromech Droids (complete)
  • Military Droids (complete)
  • Protocol Droids (complete)
  • Medical Droids (complete)
  • Labour Droids (complete)
  • Security Droids
  • Power Droids (complete)
