RNN’s newest traveling correspondent, Lahasa Fy, here reporting on a galactic week-long event currently underway on Kiffex. Held periodically, the Third Uli Memorial Swap Meet is an unparalleled gathering of sentients from all parts of the galaxy uniting in the spirit of trade, camaraderie and good will. This edition is being held from Day 14 to Day 21, although it has been reported that attendees started arriving weeks ago, and many plan to remain for weeks after the official end of the event.
Established posthumously in honor of Uli-ah Gafsa, a noted Jawa in the trading community, with a love for interaction and bartering, the core of the swap meet is based around many different vendors bringing wares of all types for sale, trade, giving away, auctions and any other forms of transaction you can imagine. If you can name it, food, clothing, antiquities, droids, weapons, tanks, ships, and collectables; you can likely obtain it, for the right price, at the swap meet. In addition, the swap meet is widely regarded as the largest gathering of individuals in the galaxy.
In continuing’ Uli’s vision, Tolando Kreig and the Knights of the Fountain run the event. This year’s sponsor supporting the Knights is the Faerytail Family. Other organized events around the Swap Meet include the Kreig’s Run and the Uli Speed Trials, racing events organized by Tolando Kreig, other speeder races, organized hunting parties across the planet, including competitions for some to challenge bringing down the fiercest creatures on the planet. But the largest attractions tend to be the simple acts of socializing, trading, and generally being seen, and seeing individuals that you might never otherwise meet. Crowds from all parts of the political, business, criminal and military spectrums, from far and wide, gather and meet with minimal hostility, violence, or anger. Putting aside our political differences and past divisions, to enjoy a respite of fun, for a week.
The event rotates across the galaxy, but each planet upon which it is held declares itself a neutral zone, maintaining that all beings are free from arrest. However, safety experts warn that anyone wishing to attend still maintain sensible safety protocols, since, although the planetary authorities themselves will not allow for arrests to be performed, that does not prevent other forms of capture or harm. In fact, one of the various forms of entertainment is a game called “The FIGHT” in which beings board a ship for the sole purpose of killing the other occupant to obtain their wares and a share of any wagers placed. Theft is not uncommon, of course, due to the egregious amount of traded goods, hunting loot, and items being given away for free.
